So Daphne, You Would Like to Keep an Octopus?

i dont have a dog or a cat (sob).

i have tried hard to convince my mom that a pet (mainly a dog)
would be beneficial to the entire household. but every request has been turned
down, the main reason being that if my brothers and sister and i cant even clean
up after ourselves, how could we possibly clean up after an animal?

hmmm … my mom has obviously not seen me clean up after
matthew. haha - jk babe.

anyway, so i’ve thought long and hard about this and i came up
with this solution. why cant we have a pet octopus ?! i think it’s a brilliant
idea. all we have to do really is to keep the water clean, but i’m sure we would
have hours of fun with it.

now i know you’re all thinking. uhm … the octopus will just
sit in a tank and do nothing all day and get very bored and so will you. well,
that’s what my mom said anyway.

that’s where you’re wrong, mom !

i wanted to take it a step further. so i thought, we could make
an octopus plastic bubble tank filled with seawater that will allow the octopus
to roll around the house when it wants to, sort of like a pet hamster only it’s
an octopus. we can take it for walks in the park or take it to go see a movie
with us. we would be the envy of a lot of people out there! even a pet door
could be installed to allow the octopus as much freedom as he wants. i bet you i
could even train that octopus, considering they are the most intelligent
molluscs.

so yeah, i told all of this to my mom and she stared at me
blankly after i finished. after a minute or two of this, she finally said, "we
still can’t have one. your dad would probably cook him for dinner."

parents! such party poopers!

WHAT KIND OF PETS DO YOU GUYS
HAVE?

Now I’m feeling so bad about the comment, “Octopus? Have you tried fried?” Sorry.

Octopi are actually incredibly smart, and your bubble idea would make a great Sit-Com scenario. Have you ever considered screenwriting? I mean, just for fun?

…Anyway..you live in NYC right? I’m thinking that your octo-bubble might get the PETA people after you more than the octo-people….and it’s never a good excuse to PETA people to say, “Well, it the octo-bubble life sure beats a light Temura batter…” Ya know?

BUT…you must try it (…no, not fried octopus…the bubble) Just wait until you get to NC…then mom and dad have no say. You’ll show them, right?

Oh, I have a dog, cat, gerbil and a Parrot that lives at my sister in-laws. Long story.

Well, I don’t have a pet but I do have a lotta mouse in my kitchen. My kitchen is becoming like a disney land.(lots of attraction?) At first I was trying to kill them all, but I realized that they are not hurmful, so I let them stay. I still want them to pay rent though.

Not harmful? You ever hear of the plague sweetie!? I live in Arizona and every now and then smoeone comes down with Hanta Virus from exposure to mice…its like a respiratory plague. IDK about the mice in Vancouver, but I’m sure those furry friends are doing you no favors.

Heck! You live in Canada. You could prolly just pay the exterminator in beer!

I love your writing style and I especially liked your octopus idea. octopuses are one of my favorite creatures and i’ve always wanted to have a little one as a pet - or to at least make friends with one in the sea or at a big aquarium. I used to visit the Giant Pacific Octopus at the Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park when I was in school there. That octopus always seemed a little bit sad to me. I don’t think it liked being in such closed quarters, although it did have a little rock house of its own to hide in. Your freedom ball for octopuses is so wonderful and dreamy! it’s such a charming idea that it causes one to immediately suspend disbelief - so i totally agree with the person who said you should write! i wouldn’t be surprised if someone read your blog and then stole that idea as the basis for some new cartoon character. It’s shocking to think that octopuses are smarter than dogs - or that we don’t even really know how intelligent they are because we don’t have ways to quantify their type of intelligence - and yet we still eat them! i looked into having tiny ones as pets, but it turns out that it’s very difficult and labor intensive to maintain a saltwater aquarium. the mineral balance, temperature, water movement, etc all have to be maintained within precise parameters and it has to be a big tank. did you ever read the story or see the octopus documentary wherein some scientists kept noticing that fish were disappearing from a tank and they didn’t know how or why? it turns out that there was an octopus in a locked tank across the room and it would wait until everyone was gone and the lights were out, then remove its tank lid, crawl out and across the room, get in the other tank, eat the fish, and then go home to its own tank! they are very inventive and learn from experience just like we do - and their tentacles and beak make them very agile. an interesting example of their intelligence is that you can put something tasty in a mason jar and seal it and then give it to them and they will play with it for a while until they figure out how to unscrew the lid and eat the treat. very few other animals except maybe chimps and humans are such good problem solvers. Anyway - your smallest ideas spur long threads so i think you’re a natural writer or public personality - great blog!
