My Brother, The Blonde Filipino

and what is it with Asians going blonde?

so last night, my brother decides that he wants to go
blonde. so we went to our local CVS and bought a bleaching kit. i, of
course, being the connoiesseur of hair dyeing offered my services for
free.

BIG MISTAKE !

what was i thinking?!! i have never
bleached hair in my entire life ! haha - so the first try did not come
out too badly except that one spot on his head was twice as light as
the rest. OOOPSIES !

the second, we discovered that he still had black
hair in some areas. so you know what they say, the third times the
charm. we put on more coating of hair dye and voila (!) he ended up with
hair that looks like he just morphed into a super-saiyan.you dragonball z geeks out there know what i’m talking about - haha!

of course, knowing my parents, my mom took one look at him and made the sign of the cross.

yeah mom, your son is now the blonde devil ! haha

so what is it with asians going blonde anyway? i know sometimes i want to do so myself, but my reasons are only because i like to try things out. could that be everyone else’s reason too?

if any of you have ever seen asian import models, almost all of them are blonde. hell, tila (one of my fav former playboy girls) is blonde and she totally pulls it off well. but then again, i dont look exactly look like a tila.

  • there is also the culture identity crisis. are
blonde asians denying their heritage, convering their roots, trying to
    be somebody they are not?
  • also for some reason, blonde on asian supposedly screams sexy. it’s a surprising contrast and makes you look twice. and i’ve been thinking what if blondes really do have more fun??

so after much thought and deliberation, i have
determined that BEING SEXY and how you identify yourself CULTURALLY has
nothing to do with what color you choose to have on your hair. anyone can. SEXY is Attitude and CULTURE is about Respecting the values and traditions of where you come from.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

I don’t think dying your hair blonde is denying your culture more than it would be for anyone, but someone from a Northern European Nation, or someone whose ancesetors were from this part of the world. Most people are just not blonde. And even in Germany, one of the ‘blondest’ countries in the world only 18% are naturally blonde. Even Marilyn Monroe was a brunette, as we all know, and her name was also slightly less glamourous, if I may add so.

Lastly, I think with all love for trying things new, I think from my viewpoint, I would not advise you to follow your brothers example..

As for your post, I have read your blog for the first time, but I think you are really good, at turning stories that could easily be completely boring, into something funny, that I can visualise immediatly. Keep up the good work, as a teacher might say!

  2. Mark Says:

My wife is blonde and lately my life with her has not been much fun at all.

Conversely, my son is really blonde and I always have a hell of a lot of fun with him.

Of course, he is only four so what does that say about me?

    My hair is getting gray.

    ; )

  3. Jacqueline Says:

Well…I did want to be blonde once but then again…after I’ve seen Asians in blonde, I decided against it. I don’t know but it just Asians just don’t look good in blonde. Brunette or dark brown will be just nice….not blonde…ishhh.

  4. Jackie Says:

it makes us err…less asian looking i guess.

  5. abigael Says:

i like listening music especially when i feel i’m alone, lonely and deppresed,it would be cheer me up and thats it i’ll be okay in a few minutes.

  6. David Says:

Hey as long as your brother getz boost up in his self-esteem, WHY NOT?!
Everyone needs to feel good about themself-that is not until they found out that they looked bad…
Which also occurs to me that the experience will bring him many laughter and smiles upon reflection many years later…
You as his sister would laugh too together… knowing bad funny he looks like. recall the picture/ image of your nro in your head, feel like laughing now? Go on… tease him a lil’

    Cheers

  7. Chris Says:

It makes him look unique because the color is rare. So people will notice. He’ll notice people notice. He’ll feel better about himself. Ergo he’ll get more girls! ;)

  8. Law Says:

From experience, being a Filipino with plain black hair does get boring, so there’s nothing wrong with changing your hair color, trust me, mine’s gone through the whole spectrum. so at the end of the day it shouldn’t matter what people think (especially Mom’s), as long as you’re happy that’s all that matters.. and if worse comes to worse you could always dye it back.

I totally agree with you though.. “BEING SEXY and how you identify yourself CULTURALLY has nothing to do with what color you choose to have on your hair. anyone can. SEXY is Attitude and CULTURE is about Respecting the values and traditions of where you come from”

    Totally. Amen.

  9. Jowell Says:

Ei, I have to agree with Law on this one, changing the color of one’s hair has nothing to do with one’s culture. Just as he said, it’s how one expresses himself. I’ve got a filipino friend (Boyet on my list), and I’ve seen him change his hair from brown to hot pink ( got in trouble at work for that one) but he’s not trying to identify with caucasians, he’s a proud flip, it’s just him personally, a carefree guy that likes to have fun. so, for me it’s all a matter of self expression… PEACE

  10. Nikko Says:

I mean, looks always come before personality, cuz you can’t just be standing 30 feet away from a girl nd be like “OH MY GOD I LOVE HER PERSONALITY” I bet 9 outa 10 guys would replace “personality” with something else. (vice-versa). Hair color doesn’t change anything but your look. At least I would hope it wouldn’t change anything else, cuz once you peek at the big picture the only thing that really matters is where your heart is.

And you’re right. Hair has nothing to do with Culture. Live the way you live. Just make sure that people can see your true colors, (and I wasn’t talking about your hair)

You’re a beautiful girl so it shouldn’t matter. But if you really wanted to change hair color… Who cares? Right? Fuck what everyone else thinks. You’re not expressing them, you’re expressing yourself.

  11. Kamaliah Says:

hahaha. this is the first time i’m reading ya blog. just stumbled over it and was in the reading mood. i think ya blog is great and fun to read with really interesting personal touches to it. kuddos!! and keep ‘em coming!

  12. Rizki Says:

You mainly have the same opinion..but as a conservatist,i have a slight negative views to those who are changing their cultural identity, sucah as blonde hair for asian here. And from another point of view,i think the Asian are more handsome or pretty with their own ‘original belongings’.I mean,it’s rather wierd for me seeing an Asian-faced boy walking around the street with blonde hair..
Anyway, every people has their own opinion..

  13. Juan Says:

I just wanna say this blog is great, congrats! every single post is really good and you can jump from something funny (like the feet issue, sister i get you cause mine are horribly big!) to something really interesting like the interracial dating, which i consider it great. And also the one about your father…you made me cry, really. Its great how you express through words…keep on doin it. Luck and Love, Juan.

  14. xoMexo Says:

more than 5 years ago .. i think 8 years ago, i dyed my hair light brown with strawberry blonde highlights. i liked it. i think that i look better in blonde than in a dark brown hair coz my complexion is so light. i look to pale in dark hair.

your mom must have been shocked to see your bro in blonde. can we see a picture? bleach blonde .. i don’t think is attractive .. but if you mix light brown with strawberry blonde .. it comes out real nice.

  15. Rena Says:

ha ha i dont believe that blondes have more fun than non blonde ppl. it all depends on ur personality, not ur hair

  16. TaNia Says:

I have that same thought one day..bout why asians go blond..I just don’t think its good with the skin color..i don’t know.. =p but definetly hair color doesn’t have anything to do with looking sexy.I think black hair is so much sexier…but i always wanted a dark brown kinda highlights things..but then again i love my hair.. =D

  17. dranoj Says:

I just want to be me… No pretentions at all. Being pinoy is still the best for me rather than being blonde…

  18. MaoSoon Says:

Well for some its a cool trend, Especially for japanese man.Not to mention the UV tan.is a Beggining of a make over, Or just “wanna be’s” i dont know

  19. Randi Says:

Take Jessica Alba for example…she was from a dark brown to blonde and she is still “wow”. Being asian like us with blonde hair is definitely a “no, no”!! I have had this bleached before from dark brown to copper. The only thing that went wrong was…the color that I wanted, came out to be BRIGHT ORANGE. Totally yukksss!! The next day, I went for DIY to dark brown. Then later the hair got worst; split ends and stuff that I ended up cutting em short. It just doesn’t suit me, the asian. The reason is because our skin is so tan that we looks better in our so-called dark color haired.

  20. myrna Says:

Let’s face it people just don’t have any SENSE OF CONTENTMENT in life..they basically have what they want but still looking for more.

  21. BingVivieneMae Says:

A few times, my husband asked me to dye my hair blond. I am Filipina with black hair colored or dyed sometimes in warm chestnut browns or copper browns in the name of fashion….But when he asked me for that blonde color, I rejected the request. I thnik I might look horrific coz I know most Asians look ridiculous with it, though there are only a few who could pull it off (maybe rockstars or top models?). But I think changing your haircolor does not mean turning away or denying your culture. Some people just do it for fun, for curiosity or just for fashion ….

  22. Rain Says:

I guess its but normal for people wanting to change appearances. But I think that globalization plays a role on Asians, being naturally dark-haired, wanting to be blond. But its not just Filipinos abroad who want to be blond. I live in the Philippines, and I see blond Filipinos. except here, they use hydrogen peroxide to dye their hair

  23. Edene Mae Says:

    hi daph!add here!

  24. Teody Says:

yeah, blondes do have more fun and may be a good source of fun too!! no offense meant but there are lot of jokes i’ve read/heard about “dumb” blondes… why do these type of jokes proliferated, anyway??..huh.. . of course, the color of your hair does not reflects someone’s attitude…or does it?.. PEACE..

  25. marlon Says:

whew..blimey this is one great blog..yup hair color doesn’t mean a thing..i mean there are a few blondes out there who are miserable and pathetic with their own life…who says they have all the fun?…sexually maybe…but when you’re fetish ends..you look for another…but let’s stop all this discrimination…blondes, non blondes etc… we are all equal…we should stear clear from stereotyping…

by the way..you are one rockin’ FILIPINA…

  26. Anna Says:

Ive seen some of them, even my sister and one of my bestfriends had their hair dyed blonde (it suits them as theyre light-skinned)
I used to want to dye my hair electric blue back in high school, but my mom wouldve gone into conniptions =P

  27. iron Says:

it’s just color…that’s it…there’s nothing to it unless u yourself wanna do something about it and used the color as an excuse…that’s how simple it is

  28. czethren Says:

Just wanna say this 2u, I like d way ur sense of humor! you are so smart and very impressive! The most it makes me interest is all about ur column…keep up the good work and one more thing…

LYF IS THE LONGEST THING WE CAN DO! EVERYONE IN THIS PLANET CANNOT SAVE D WORLD! BUT U CAN TOTALLY MAKE DIFFERENCE 2 A PERSON…
    GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS..

  29. Joyce Anne Says:

I -SO- know what you mean by that. I have a problem with asians going blonde. It’s just not right… It looks REALLY wrong. We should all embrace the hair we were born with. Hell, when I went back to Asia in the summer, all the products they have is all about having blacker hair and shinier blacker hair.

  30. Raydeane Jill Says:

i don’t think being blonde would make me look like a “star”………..
    duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh………..
it’s just a matter of loving yourself for how God really made you….
CONTENTMENT is the great key to carry yourself out in the public well, right???????

  31. Ana Says:

Simple. I have to agree with your statement.

  32. Jeffrey Says:

i think all of us here can pretty much decide for ourselves, just make sure that if you are to re-invent yourself, your doing it because you like it or you want it, and youre doing it for yourself… dont do any drastic changes just to please everyone or just to get accepted by other cultures… and besides, testing waters is always fun… right…? =) i’ve tried platinum blonde to ultra black…! what have you… and it was fun…! hehehe the thread is dated back to july, am i too late..? hahaha…

  33. Brandon sean Says:

we asian alwis have black hair we want to be different..

  37. Morfin Says:

black is still a lot sexier…

  38. hanifah Says:

My friend change her hair colour blonde, but she still looks pretty.

  39. Melisande Says:

black is still the best for us filipinos…

  40. Beth Says:

Blonde hair, pink hair, blue or black… bottomline, I think that doing whatever makes you feel good and happy about yourself is cool.

  41. xXtRiShXx Says:

FOR ME, asians goin blonde are trying to blend in with the crowd, i leave in canada and i know ALOT of asians dying their hair BLONDE just because they can blend in. as for me..i rather keep my hair black like always…

  42. 'Haneqz Says:

“going” blonde was an “in” thing couple of years back.I’m asian. =)

  43. Depressionist Says:

Going blonde for Asians is like men dressing up ( or down - whichever one they choose to do ) in pink.

Men in pink wear adorn such a colour because they are confident of their sexuality.

Asians who are blonde bear such a colour because they are confident of their culture and heritage.

Sure, sometimes you cant deny - people mix up the guys as gays just because of what colour they wear. And sometimes people mix up asians who’re blonde as trying to be caucasian just because their hair colour’s like that. But these are just people with narrow mindsets. Stereotypes. If they cant accept the bigger picture, then why bother, right? No matter how hard you try, you just cant change the whole world.

  44. LadyUrduja Says:

Been reading your blogs and I almost peed myself laughing here at work…

Anyways… just wanted to comment… I won’t deny that there are people out there are Asian people out there that do what they can to “deny” their heritage and some do it because they like the look of it. Years ago, I used to be ridiculed by my parents for being so dark. (I used to get tan lines from being in the sun for 2 minutes - no exageration!!!) But now that I’m all grown up (lol)my Caucasian co-workers are always envious of my naturally thick curly hair, and my dark skin. And I used to think “Wow, I wish I had flat, straight, hair and fair skin.” I don’t think that its necessarily denying heritage - I think its more like “Grass is always greener on the other side”

    Cheers.
